Travelog: Portobello Market, London

Yes, I'm finally in London! I had to sleep early last night because jet lag took over my body *and mind* and well, I shut down like my Mac with a dead battery :D

This morning, bright and early, we went over to Portobello Market on Portobello Road (tube station: Notting Hill Gate) where we spent a good 3 hours scouring each stall for well, you know, good finds :)

It was my children's first time to London so the whole flea market experience was still rather fascinating to them, and it was also my partner and best friend Dina and her husband Fred's first as well. I promised Dina won't be disappointed :) *Dina and I love to pore over antique things-- I think we are old souls :D*

At the very mouth of Portobello Road, this was a sign of things to come.

Oh for accessories lovers, let me tell you now that the Portobello Market is a must of a pitstop-- and it's open only on weekends. Be prepared to spend. So bring lots of cash as some merchants still don't take credit card payments.

Let these photos below convince you to head to Portobello Market if you come out to London :) And oh these photos? Mere tips of the iceberg!! Yes, there are so much more things to see! It was visually fulfilling-- promise!

Gourmet marshmallows! I initially thought they were handmade soap LOL! When my friends pointed out that they were mallows, I had to taste them. They were indeed great and yes, taking mallows to the next level, but oh boy they were sooooo sweet that I already physically felt my teeth decaying and growing cavities with each bite :)
Gourmet Marshmallows! That strawberry- basil flavor is very good!

Oh hello, the relevance of each of my blog posts to bags shall remain present of course :) These are handmade leather satchels.  I love their weathered look in person, but I was not too big a fan of the color of the tan. It's very old school though :)

I would've bought a few of these for my kitchen or for my kids' room. I like them very much!

While we are here in London, it's also Wimbledon time :)  Check out those very old tennis rackets * Bjorn Borg's time-- at the height of his career :D = bet you kids don't even know who Bjorn Borg is--because he's way before our time LOL (teehee, heavy emphasis on the words "OUR time" please) :D*

When I saw these, I just had to buy! Stamps!!

The merchant who was selling these stamps said her father worked on these. I loooove them. I do wonder when I'll use them though, but ohhh yeaaaahh I had to get me a crown stamp. You know, to indulge the royal wannabe in me :) If my name only began with E, I'd probably have bought that coronet with Queen Elizabeth's initials too haha *die hard royalist much? :D*

Sigh, it was really such a beautiful day... So postcard perfect :)

Make sure to walk the whole length of Portobello Road where you will cross Elgin Crescent. That's where the Cath Kidston shop is as well as some pubs and good places to eat-- oh and also on that area onward, you can have your fill of fresh fruits.

Sadly though, The Travel Bookshop which was made famous by the movie Notting Hill which starred Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, is no longer around *hit by recession and the surge in sales of ebooks :(*

Portobello Market is definitely worth a visit if you are in London over a weekend. Be mindful of your wallet and mobile phone though, and oh yes, be wary as well of some merchandise as certain merchants have taken to interspersing cheaper "antique- looking" pieces with the real ones. It's really a buyer beware situation with everything these days, so do look over the things you plan to buy with extreme care and caution, haggle, and then of course, enjoy them after  *no regrets allowed :)*

P.S. If you are too lazy to walk back to the Notting Hill Gate (Central Line) tube station from Elgin Crescent, there is another tube station about 7 minutes' walk-- the Ladbroke Grove.

Charlotte Olympia London 2012 Perspex Clutchicon

I love Charlotte Olympia's perspex clutch not because it has the Union Jack flag on it, but because it has those interior satin pouches that are actually interchangeable!  So you don't just get the Union Jack flag pouch. You also get these!

I think it's THE perfect souvenir for: the Queen's Jubilee, the London 2012 Olympics, and well, London the city :)

And hey, you don't need to have gone to London to "relate" and carry this clutch :) It is really such a nice souvenir--  a very useful one! This clutch will not be staying in a glass case like those souvenir porcelain tankers or pillboxes :).

The Charlotte Olympia London 2012 Perspex Clutchiconis now available for purchase HERE (Net-a-Porter) icon.  :)

Hermes Vibrato Leathers

It's no longer often that you see a Hermes vibrato birkin for sale at Hermes. In fact, from what I was told, they have since stopped production of the vibrato leather birkins (and kellys) because of the more laborious and time consuming process-- most vibrato birkins today are especially ordered and take so long to be completed-- if these orders can be fulfilled at all :(

Some people have mistaken vibrato for fabric. Vibrato is not a fabric of some sort. It is in fact, stacked leather-- which is why the process to make it is more laborious. Strips of leather are stacked together painstakingly to create that look-- think of it as a cross- section of the stacked leathers. There you have it :)

Vibrato birkins are normally paired with box leather such as this one:

And then you have the vibrato birkin body paired with a togo leather flap and handles. It's not often you see this pairing too-- it is in fact, very rare.

I feel that vibrato leather birkins have been so under- appreciated in the past, but if you are looking for that extra special something that perhaps other Hermes bag- loving women don't always have, go for a vibrato leather bag. It's not as difficult to get exotic leather birkins as it is a vibrato birkin these days (yep, vibrato's harder to get!), plus the price difference of course is staggering-- the exotic leather one being way more expensive!

Wrote a piece on Hermes leathers for my newspaper column some months ago-- in case you want to read up on the types of leather, do check out my story HERE :)

Armani's Aqua di Giò Essenza

Love this!!

Bruce Weber has this new film that he directed for Armani's Aqua di Giò Essenza , starring Simon Nessman.

I've been wooed by the scent of Aqua di Giò since its first launch in the late 90s.

Today, the journey of Aqua di Giò Essenza begins, as Giorgio Armani had wanted to create a concentrate of power and sensuality.

This is THE  perfect gift for your man.  Find out more about Aqua di  Giò Essenza on ArmaniBeauty.Com

The Royal Budget: Duchess of Cambridge

She is the Duchess of Cambridge. And she is not really expected to have only 10 outfits in her closet. After all, she is fast becoming an ambassador for Britain-- and I'm not just talking about the fashion realm (if she isn't already, hello!).

I didn't really balk when I saw how much was the estimated amount spent on her fashion. And then came this list of course, courtesy of the Daily Mail *lol-- talk about being really credible :D*.

Double click image to enlarge

Seriously? I think she is worth every pence.  I do however, think she overpaid (or was overcharged) for that Jenny Packham floral dress-- if it is indeed the price Daily Mail claimed it to be. £6,000 for this?

Seriously?! Even hand- painted Chinoiserie designs by De Gournay don't merit a price tag like this for a short dress, no?  Price aside, I thought the dress was beautiful on Kate.

I'm also so pleased to see that she is fully supportive of Anya Hindmarch as well as some of other baghag brand favorites like Prada, Mulberry, and even Alexander McQueen. I still do believe she needs to rock a statement clutch as opposed to a very nondescript one. I know she is a classic dresser but really, the one area she needs to come through is the bag department. She is too young to be carrying such classic pieces all the time. She needs to ROCK IT once in awhile.

Come on, Kate. This clutch by Anya Hindmarch.

Or of course she could still carry the Alexander McQueen Brittania Clutchicon(available at Net-A-Portericon) ! It's still the Queen's Jubilee Year-- never too late :)

Both are by British designers. Do it, Duch :) Right, peeps? :D

Missoni Romantic

Only Margherita Missoni could've pulled off a bridal concoction confection (LOL think cake proportions) like this Giambattista Valli gown.

The flower- embellished Missoni silk was fantastic. But I am not too convinced with those sleeves. It reminded me of the "Parisian- designed" wedding gown of Maya Rudolph (Lillian) in Bridesmaids LOL *If you haven't seen the film, go see it*.

And no, Margherita's gown was not meant as an asymmetrical sleeved dress.
When she walked down the "aisle", both sleeves were up. Looked real nice from the back though :)

Yes, I know this is far more different than the lace gowns that we have seen of late a- la- Kate Middleton, but I think I'd have left the 80 sleeves back in the 80s :D I must admit though, Margherita does look dreamy, and it was such a romantic- looking wedding. Sigh :)

The tiara and those laser- cut leather silver sandals were perfect :) Loved that she didn't leave out the comfort and glamour factor in her wedding :)

Those eyes! That face! Hope we see more of Shanina Shaik soon.

Kiss Me...

I have seen the previous Lulu Guinness collection on her website but I am so pleased to finally her bags in LUISAVIAROMA.

This clutch of course has to be the key piece in her collection for FW 2012- 13 :)

When I was in Florence for LUISAVIAROMA's Firenze4Ever event, we had this Style Lab session and I decided to work with a model for the shoot. Deborah is so versatile and beautiful. Had a great time working with her. :)

Here she was, working the clutch in her Versace dress and Alexander Birman pumps.

Oh and here's a fun action shot of the clutch-- as Bagsnob and I goofed around in- store :)

The Lulu Guinness clutch will soon be available at LUISAVIAROMA ONLINE. Watch out for it :) It's a must- have clutch because it is without a doubt, a conversation starter :)

The Hermes Collier de Chien

In the last 4 days, I have seen the Hermes collier de chien on two celebrities-- first was Katie Holmes who was also carrying an Hermes Medor Clutch,

and the other is Jennifer Lopez who chose it in a bright color.

Pretty, no? :) Last I checked at a Hermes boutique, they had none available too! Is the collier de chien becoming just as elusive as a Hermes birkin or kelly? :(

Another: Hermes Blue Leather Collier De Chien Cuff with Gold Hardware (Click Here for more details)
