Photoblog: Tod's Bag Factory Visit (Part 2)

Hope you enjoyed yesterday's post which gave you a glimpse of the Tod's factory and warehouse. Was it impressive or what? My head still spins everytime I think about "The Cage"!

Today, I'll take you through another section within the factory where the bags are made :)

Cutting patterns on leather at the design lab

This is one of the materials used for the Karl Lagerfeld x Hogan line

In one corner, lookie! The interior linings of bags! They are sewed and then each thread end is secured to make sure the threads don't run. This is done by hand, by the way!

The "stamps" on the leather were made by these! I love looking at this box!

The plate is added onto the machine where the leather is, and it gets heat pressed with that gold or silver foil

This is the product (without gold/ silver foil)

The sides of the leather are then "gummed" or tinted a certain shade, to keep the edges "clean".

I find it so amazing that these people who paint on those black tinted gum onto the leather edges can be so precise! If that were me, I'd have mucked it all up and smudged black ink all over the leather !!

Oh! Caught a glimpse of the laptop case for the Tod's signature line! It's really nice!  I'd love it in bright colors!

Here's where and how they cut the leather in the factory

The skiving process where the leather pieces go through this machine to reduce the thickness which makes them more pliable. It makes a big difference!

Handles of the bags

Leather bag bottoms!

You might see these zipper pulls on your Tod's bag. Each of those go through one of these women who neatly cut and trim excess thread.

Ahhh Tod's bags in patent red! Beautiful! I was so tempted to just take one off the rack and run lol ;)

I espied a whole rack of unfinished bags.

These bags did not pass quality control. To tell you frankly, I did not see anything wrong with them! At all! This just proves one thing-- Tod's was VERY strict when it came to quality control!

In another room, more bags line these racks.
Loving that there are exterior pockets!
This makes for a very, very good workbag!

Inspecting and then stuffing the bags-- this is one of the Karl Lagerfeld x Hogan totes.

Putting tags on each bag. Such a laborious process, but it's still done by hand!

After that, each bag gets stored in its own dustbag before they get packed all together, and I believe that's when they get sent out to stores *after all the documentation and paperwork of course* :)

Hope you enjoyed this photo tour of the Tod's factory in Brancadoro, Italy. And more than that, I hope like me, you have come to appreciate the workmanship and process that goes into each Tod's bag. So now, you should go visit your nearest Tod's boutique and take the plunge-- invest one of those bags ;)
